Georgia high school shooting:At least 4 killed

At Winder, Georgia's Apalachee High School, a mass shooting claimed the lives of two 14-year-old student and two teachers. All nine individuals who were hurt and sent to the hospital—seven pupils and one teacher—are anticipated to make a full recovery.

According to FBI Atlanta and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, police authorities last year questioned the suspect, a 14-year-old student at the school, and his father about "anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting." It was not a likely time to make an arrest.

The head of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation claims that the pistol used in the massacre on Wednesday was an AR-platform firearm. It was an AR-15-style rifle, a law enforcement officer had earlier told CNN.

This is at least the 45th school shooting  in 2024 and the deadliest this year, according to a CNN analysis

suspected gunman

Colt has been named as the alleged shooter.
Gray will be charged with murder and tried as an adult.
Gray was questioned by law enforcement last year regarding “several anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting at an unidentified location and time,” according to FBI Atlanta and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. At that time, there was no probable cause for arrest.

Timetable for the shooting

Lyela Sayarath, a student, reported that at approximately 9:45 a.m., the accused gunman exited the classroom during their Algebra 1 lesson. Near the end of the lesson, he came back and banged to get back in. Lyela added that as soon as the other student saw the pistol, she decided not to answer the door. According to her, the gunman entered the adjacent classroom and started shooting.

Around 10:20 a.m., the sheriff's office got the initial reports of the gunshot.

Soon after those calls, two school resource officers assigned to Apalachee High were joined by law police.

The gunman was approached by a resource officer, and he instantly turned himself in and was brought into prison, according to Barrow County Sheriff Jud

All district high schools were placed on lockdown following the shooting, and police were dispatched to all of them as a precaution.

Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that the ATF and FBI had later arrived on the scene and were collaborating with local and state officials.

The Investigation

Law enforcement sources told CNN that no reports of additional incidents or scenes were received.

The head of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation claims that the pistol used in the massacre on Wednesday was an AR-platform firearm. It was an AR-15-style rifle, a law enforcement officer had earlier told CNN.

Earlier in the morning, Apalachee High School received a phone threat threatening five campuses with shootings, with Apalachee being the first to see numerous law enforcement shootings.
GBI Director Chris Hosey said there’s no evidence of other schools being targeted, but investigators are pursuing “any leads of any potential associates of the shooter that was involved in this incident.” At this point, there’s no evidence that any additional shooter was involved, and no evidence of a list of schools being targeted, Hosey said.

Schools in the county will be closed for the week while the investigation plays out.
